DOBINI BALWAUM (Inline) — Didone-style 18th century modern serif
═══════════════════════════════════
Dobini Balwaum is a Didone, or modern, serif typefaces inspired by the works of Bodoni, Didot and Walbaum.
This font had been in the making for quite a long time as I ren into several design difficulties along the way. Most challenging parameter was the inline width. By default the width for the inline was set at 0.125 (or 1/8th) grid units.
Maintaining a constant width for the inline proved to be next to impossible. Therefor it evolves around a 'close' approximation of 0.125 units instead. Stroke weight for the letterform contours also proved to be somewhat of a constraining factor for the overall design concept. As it limits the ability to build complex geometry.
Due to the complexity in brick arrangements the font remains having some minor imperfections that I wasn't able to polish out so fat yet, and some may never will..
For now only Basic Latin letters, it remains a WIP
I hope you like it so far,
Cheers
A little experiment with the "connect" bricks (and an healty dose of stacking). I wasn't referencing any specific example of the style (of which there are many), but I'm sure that, looking for solutions as I went, I ended up with something similar to already existing typefaces (and fontstructions).
Unfortunately, some connecting bricks don't align exactly, so I had to resort to approximate them, when possible, with more stacking, which didn't particularly help the already lacking consistency in construction.
But enough moaning, enjoy!
My final entry in the competition. Inspired by Mazey, zlabyrinths eYe/FS, and wavelength. Each glyph has its own maze, and each maze connects with the next. Tilde ~ and low line _ connect words, grave ` closes beginnings and ends, and the left and right arrows < > are for the start and end. There are also some alternates in Extended Latin A. Suggestions and critiques are welcome. Thanks!
UPDATES:
04/06/14 The whole font has been updated to be one brick taller, and thus properly fit onto a grid. Also, some characters have been redesigned. V2.0
05/13/14 All punctuation has been modified to continue a word maze. V2.1
07/05/14 1000 downloads! Hooray! As a 'thank you', I've completed more of More Latin. V2.2
08/22/14 I've made the accents part of the maze. I've also changed a few characters, and added Œ and œ. V2.3
08/04/15 Added Polish support with Ą, Ć, Ę, Ł, Ń, Ś, Ź, and Ż. Tweaked a few characters as well, and added a crossbar to the ð. V2.4
06/18/16 Added support for multiple languages with more Cyrillic chars and punctuation. Also tweaked a few chars.
A funky idea that started with the A and expanded from there. Most letters are drawn by a single line winding around, although some are just not willing to follow this mantra. I found this half-finished while scrolling through my private FontStructions, looking for ideas for the CounterComp, and decided it was already an interesting entry :-)
There's an alternate, narrow set of numbers that can be reached with Shift+number (on a QWERTY, Dvorak, etc. layout); not sure which set fits the style better. Suggestions and critiques welcome for anything, and feel free to clone and poke around with it. Thanks and enjoy!
TwentiesComp entry, inspired by art deco architecture. Not sure about the V, left some variations there for comparison. Also the uppercase/lowercase grave and acute are different, would like to hear which you prefer.
