This is my first typeface as a first-year graphic design student at UWE. It has been created based on the theme ''Rebirth''. Inspired by the Renaissance which means ''rebirth'' in French the typeface is a transition from the old to the new. It is also connected to moon phases as a symbol of rebirth and change. The typeface is a combination of sharp elements and smooth shapes, has some futuristic and traditional motifs. Each letter is unique and can be used by itself or in a text with the others. Any comments are welcomed.
As a first year Graphic Design student at UWE, I have made my first attempt at a fonstruction, creating a font based around the theme of 'rebirth'. I have researched and explored the Japanese art form: Kintsugi which involves the restoration of broken pottery through connecting the broken parts with liquid gold, creating something new and unique. This art form allows us to embrace the beauty of flaws and imperfection, and through each letter I have attempted to recreate the rough, jagged lines of the broken pottery, and the cracks of 'gold' which bind them together (shown through the white lines). Any comments/advice would be really appreciated.
For my chosen theme Community (specifically biological community)
I decided to work with a worm/snake shape. Trying to figure out the final letter shapes during the creative process I got inspired by the snake game I'm sure everyone played on their old Nokia including me.
I observed the snake's movements in the game and created a typeface based on that. I would characterize my typeface as a simple combination of retro and modern at the same time.
Created by Nicole Rybáková as a first-year graphic design student at UWE Bristol Uni.
This font was based on the theme “Hope”. It was inspired by spray painted protests and the textures and inconsistency of hand-painted placards. Seeing people standing together, holding their placards high created a sense of hope that change and reforms could be made to create a more just and equal society.
This is a cloneFollowing the theme "protect" my typeface is based off something one might want to protect themselves from - spiders. I have tried to imitate spiders legs through this font to create an unnerving "feel" about it.
Inspired by water movement, this typeface was created for my 'What The Font' project for UWE. I became inspired by the rippling and fluidity of water when looking through photos from my recent snorkelling trip in the Red Sea. I began experimenting on grid paper to form a draft typeface that I could build onto in Fontstruct.
My font was created with the idea of mess and chaos in mind with each letter having a different 'contents'
It is supposed to represent something similar to pin and string art. The white dots representing the pins and the lines within representing the string. It might come across as a little complicated or hard to distinguish each letter however I think it gives it an authentic look.
Pollute is a font inspired by the theme 'destructive'. The creation of this Fontstruct was influenced by harmful and destructive emissions produced by farming.
The irregular structure of each letter suggests the way in which emissions and gases warp. Although rounded, the edges are sharp, portraying the destructive nature of emissions. The circular blocks, some hollow and some solid, represent the structure of gas. The 3D look I was aiming to produce from the centre of each letter was difficult to create, and therefore my design was limited.
FORWARD- I wanted to create a font in which felt like it had movement. I also wanted it to relate to codeing and glitching, so it had a technical feel. This font connects together, even when re-arranged. This was put in place to lead the viewer through the text so that they felt they were being lead into a digital world. I wanted This Font to be Energetic and hectic, and i feel like ive done this with the use of smaller pixels breaking up the thicker and more readable lettering.
This is a cloneI developed this typeface in response to the theme of 'dangerous', my inspiration was barbed wire and fencing. I associate dangerous with restricted areas and confinement so I felt that creating a typeface reflecting wires and sharp points would accurately represent my theme. The straight, angular lines are similar to metal bars and so I believe give the feeling of a prison.
My union font was inspired by my original Aztec font, where I was playing with simple geometrical shapes. It turned out to be too simple, so I changed the placement of the circles which are now the connection between the two parts of the letter. The circle plays an important role in this font, as it represened the imagery of Aztec God, and now reflects unity.
HIGH SOCIETY
This font was created based originally on the word 'Gregarious'. From that I researched Social Housing in the UK. These are spaces designed to house many people for as cheap as possible. I used compound blocks to create complex detailed flats that stack up as high as a tower block usually would.
My fontstruction inspired by building structures, each letters ascenders and descenders inspired me to shape each letter in their individual way. I tried to include different aspects of what you see in buildings throughout the alphabet like stairs, windows, doors, roofs etc.
My chosen theme name was systematic and I followed that theme through to my style of type face by how buildings and structures are systematic, they work together as a big system and fit into a city.
This typeface developed from the word gregarious, this word is defined as sociable or enjoying company of others, the term was used the most in the 1920s. I developed this study to looking at 1920s typefaces and aimed to find a way of making the geometric sanserifs look sociable and lively. A main social activity at this time was listening to the new revelation of Jazz music which became the basis of how I wanted to portray in this project whilst showing a modern twist. Jazz musicians play their songs in their own distinct styles, and so you might listen to a dozen different jazz recordings of the same song, but each will sound different and this idea is something i tried to bring into this typeface; the set of letters look the same but depending on which word/sentence you type it will look different.
With this font, I have developed and tried to capture the theme 'Filthy'. In my brainstorm I came up with the idea that people sometimes use the word filthy to describe a drop in a song, which then lead me on to researching festivals and raves as they are filthy environments. In my research of raves I confirmed the most filthy place is usually the floor and how rubbish is scattered about. This then gave me the practical idea to go outside grap dead leaves and pour them onto glue which spelt the word filthy. I then copied the out come next to it which then i developed onto Fontstruct.
My first digitally rendered typeface that focused around the theme of energy and its synonyms. I wanted to explore a typeface that would create the illusion of movement without using decorative elements such as gradients, serifs or superfluous details.
The minimalistic approach was inspired by typefaces designed by Paul Rand and the concept was inspired by 'sans forgetica'
This is a cloneThis typeface was created from the theme of gregarious. Inspired mainly by the idea that we as sociable creatures live in society amongst people. To create the letter forms I walked around the city of Bristol, mapping my routes, therefore creating my typeface through interacting with the city constricted by the buildings around me. I put my typeface on a small grid to formulate the idea of a route, block by block.
Based on the word: 'Destructive', the 'Beta Build' font is one that resembles a somewhat destroyed buildng. Having the solid chunks of the letters correspond with the steel beam-like structure of the inside sets it as both a work in progress building as well one that is crumbling due to an unforseen man made or natural disaster.
This is a cloneThis is the font I have created around the theme of ‘squishy’. Basing it on Neurons being formed into a typeface, showing how they can be manipulated in various ways. I found this topic very interesting to look into, as Neurons send electrical signals throughout the body, and as humans we communicate through language.
This typeface has been inspired by close ups of the body. I began by looking at the patterns in brain scans and vein compositions. I experimented though sketching and multiple attempts in Font Struct, to discover which sizes and shapes would turn out most successful. To try and inform my research I also created a 3D model of my font using pieces of spaghetti, this led me to try and incorporate more organic curves in to my work. This was a challenging process, which I found I could only complete with the straight, horizontal and triangle half squares.
This is a cloneThe font TOREN takes its name from a sentient spaceship in the “Ancillary” series by Ann Leckie and is designed as a futuristic display font. Much of the inspiration for this font came from studying science-fiction film posters and book covers which is where the name originated. Important information to know about the font is it is only uppercase and works best as a stand-alone graphic element.
I am currently studying Graphic Design at The University of the West of England and this is my first typeface on Fonstruct.
The theme I chose was Community, specifically gaming communities and how important they have been for people during lockdown.
Revive is the first Iteration of a font inspired and designed to celebrate a rebirth in urban environments. I focussed on using simple geometric shapes and simplifying the feeling I wanted to convey with my font. By moving the x height of the letters really close to the cap height I tried to recreate the illusion of perspective, as if you were looking at a building from an “ants eye view” This helped convey a feeling of growth and structure representing the re-birth of nature and cities together.
The goals for this typeface was to create a quirky design, inspired by the map of the underground. I ensured that my letters abided by the rules that Harry Beck set while designing the map - horizontal, vertical and 45° lines, and incorporating circles into my design. I wanted this typeface to have a friendly feel and to reflect the theme of the community through the idea of connection.
I created this typeface based on the theme ‘Hope’. While being or becoming blind is extremely hard, there is always light after the dark, even for the people who cannot see. I tried to include every character from the Braille alphabet (white dots) to the original English alphabet (black dots), so it would be learnt and understood easily.
