This typeface is based on the theme of disintegration. I tried to make it as relevant to that theme as possible but did have a variety of issues along the way. By simplifying the idea again and again I feel that the typeface is both relevant to the theme while also having potential to be used in editorial work. I originally tried basing my font on DIN Condensed in order to pick up speed, but it instantly felt that I wanted to create an original piece. I feel that this typeface would be best suited to a small poster with decorative intent.

This font looks like it's disintigrating right before your eyes.

Built around the theme of Decay, the main meaning behind this font is representation of Architectural Decay. The tight kerning and thin widths of each letter are to show the height of buildings when put together in skylines. The mixture of serif and sans serif letters are used as examples of both traditional and modern day architecture being brought together in the same space, although how despite the age differences, both old and new are prone to decay like everything else.

This is my first fontstruct design for my project in my Graphic Design degree at UWE Bristol. This typeface is based on ‘decay’ and the way it takes shape on objects, almost as if it’s melting/ taking over like some kind of disease. I have also used thorns and the way they wrap around each other, like a snake wrapping itself round it’s pray.

This is the typeface I have created in response to my university brief - to create a typeface using the software fontstuct. I choose the theme decay and after research my font is based on the decay found in urban areas, specifically old industrial American areas such as Detroit and the font found there. This is a clone of Detroit Decay Bold

When be began the project on designing my own typeface, I had to design and create it relating to a specific theme. I chose to focus my design on the theme of 'Decay'.
From the beginning, I wanted to create typeface which represented a very basic idea of the the theme of Decay. I looked at all possible avenues that I could take into design consideration and ended up coming with some interesting concepts I could use.
I started looking at the idea of Decay throughout technology. I began taking photos as well as researching forms of decay in technology. The one aspect which kept coming up were computer keyboards. I found plenty of images of keyboards with decay, which then acted as a key influence for my work.
The idea for having my typeface created in the style of computer keys was quite unique to me. When in the creation process, I created the key design as well as the letter-forms which I had mapped out using graph paper. I was then to add the appearance of decay to the letter-forms afterwards.
I then started coming up with styles of decay I could incorporate into the letter-forms. I wanted to have a clear representation of the theme, but keep it in the style/representation of computers. i.e Pixels.
I messed around with one of the letter-forms with a basic pixel appearance of decay. When zoomed in, it didn't look like the standard I wanted it to be, but when zoomed out, the pixels came together to present the them in detail. I then went ahead and applied the feature to all of the letter-forms and punctuation symbols. The typeface was finally complete.

Living in the shadows. Many children during the second world war were forced to hide for their lives, in dark confined spaces and remain extremely quiet, sometimes for months. My fontstruct typography 'scattered light' was created as part of a design brief given by UWE bristol, the theme followed the word shadow, and thought out the development of the font i looked at the light and shadows created as well as the rays or holes of light that would make it through small gaps. This was sometimes all the light they would see. I've tried to replicate this and take further inspiration from the decayed walls photographed after the war. The font is white on a black background, to symbolize the shadows/darkness they lived in. The font resembles scattered light and decayed surfaces from that period in time.

Clone of Thunderball. When wanting to make this font lighter, I realised it made the font look rugged. But I liked it, so I stayed with it. This is a clone of Thunderball

This is my first fontstruct design which i have done while studying at UWE. It comes from the idea of leaves decaying in the Autumn and how parts of them breakaway as time goes on. This is only my first draft of the type face and its not completely finished yet so comments are appreciated.

This is Fracture my first font. My chosen theme for this project was ‘disintegrate’. I began by looking up synonyms for my theme and I explored them visually in my sketchbook, just basic pencil sketches of a handful of letters. I went for quite illustrative type with a simple structure – the effect layered over the letter. Whilst flicking through ‘typography sketchbooks’ I found some work I liked and considered to be a similar style to mine – urban influences. The letter works on a square of 10-34 across with a width of about 10 squares on the elements of the letter itself, although it varies on corners and joins which gives it a block or slab style. Because of the styling of the typeface I would say it’s use is in short texts or headings. It works better on small scales as on a larger scale the curves and disintegrating effect begin to pixelate.

Urban Destruction is based on a destructed city. This evolved from the idea that fire is dangerous, and the cause of fire is destruction. I took this idea and developed it to destructed buildings that provoke a dangerous environment. This could be used as a title of a graphic novel, which are usually based in dangerous cities.

This font came from the idea of 'squishy' being merged with the word 'decay' - such things as food become 'squishy' when they start to 'decay' and rot.

a research into dementia. This designed typeface represents the process of memory loss. Diagnosed, you lose all connections that you once took for granted. Now they are slowly drifting away from their once true and solid form.
I wanted my typeface to appear slightly un-legible as a whole, but with it's original form still present.

This typeface is based around the theme of decay. I was looking into how society and the world is decaying through pollution and such which then lead me to look into the after affects of pollution and waste, what does it look like? I started to burn some materials and photograph them throughout the proccess, I was then able to make letter forms from the imagery I had collected. This is a clone

(UNFINISHED) This is my first ever "fontstruction". It's based around the theme of decay. I looked at tooth decay and urban decay, and mixed them to create this rotting roots font.
