Living in the shadows. Many children during the second world war were forced to hide for their lives, in dark confined spaces and remain extremely quiet, sometimes for months. My fontstruct typography 'scattered light' was created as part of a design brief given by UWE bristol, the theme followed the word shadow, and thought out the development of the font i looked at the light and shadows created as well as the rays or holes of light that would make it through small gaps. This was sometimes all the light they would see. I've tried to replicate this and take further inspiration from the decayed walls photographed after the war. The font is white on a black background, to symbolize the shadows/darkness they lived in. The font resembles scattered light and decayed surfaces from that period in time.

I began by exploring the theme of decaying objects, such as fruit, and studied the shape (and change of shape) of the objects, as they progressively fell apart. By creating hand drawn sketches i began to create a typeface that looked as though it was rotting/melting away. I used a traditional typeface, Times New Roman, that could be considered as quite boring and a font which has been around for a long time and then used it as a base font which i then made to look as though it was rotting and falling apart by refering back to my earlier sketches. Overall I aimed to create a typeface that represents the decay of an older, more traditional and perhaps overused typeface.

This is a font that i have designed and created as part of a project given in the first term of my first year doing Graphic Design at UWE. The initial theme for my project was "Decay" where I researched different types of rotting, erosion and decay of quality in every day objects. I then came to look at crumbling brick walls and developed my font from there. I've tried to show a lack in defined edges and emphasise a crumbled, smudgey typeface. I think it could be used as a relatively playful font, but could have strong impact if used for communicating the idea of decay or decompositon. This is a bold font, meant to be used big! Feel free to comment or discuss !

This is my very first attempt on Fonstruct. My theme is based around Decay but it has a slight touch of Motion. I looked at how vines twist and surround objects over time.
All comments appreciated

1st University project, set for the typography course, aiming to produce a typeface based on the word 'Decay'. The type was inspired by the decaying of flesh, in particular, looking at the aftermath. This is also my 1st time using FontStruct.

Typeface initially based on the theme of decay, getting inspiration from the look of old, rotten, decayed wood. Created for my first year project at UWE Bristol, and my first fontstruction.

This font came from the idea of 'squishy' being merged with the word 'decay' - such things as food become 'squishy' when they start to 'decay' and rot.

Font based on the theme of decay. I started by looking at the decaying buildings, working from photographs of tired brick and worn surfaces. I made some rubbings from text on the side of a building and this is what the main font outline is based on. I wanted to create a worn font, with an almost burnt texture to replicate the worn and disintegrating buildings I started with. The name comes from text on the side of a building and I think the textures of decay can be beautiful. This is a clone

The original starting point for this typeface was "Decay." I was thinking about what is left after something has completely decayed, which brought me to the idea of using skulls. After having created the skull outline, I tried different ways of including the letterforms, and decided that the simpler the better (and more readable.) As a result, the typeface has gained a sort of old-school computer game-esque feel - hence the name.
This Fontstruction has been created as a part of a Project during my first term studying Graphics at UWE.This is a clone of GAME OVER

This is my first fontsruction since studying at Uwe. I started looking at decay before looking into wood decay and the fungi and mushrooms that grow from it. Here I have make each letter resemble a mushroom.

I started this typeface from the word 'chaos', and from that word looked into things like wars and riots; ineffectually looking into the after affects of chaos. This led me to look into such large scale events as Hiroshima, and the wreckage of that chaos inspired this typeface.

I created this font using the subject matter 'decay'. I am an amateur, having never used fontstruct before and only ever created hand rendered fonts or type via letter press this was a challenge! It is by no means perfect (I will finish the x,y and z shortly when my internet stops giving me grief). I have already tried to type this description several times but fontstruct persistently signs me out every time I reach a crucial stage in my production :( feel free to interpret how you wish! It is entitled burn but I believe and have been told that the patterns also resemble mouldy old fruit/veg and general decay - lovely!

First year Graphic's Student at uwe, this was part of a project where i was given the word decay, and had to go about designing a display font based around this word. So i went out and looked at decaying locations around bristol. I was influenced by fly posters on walls which had been layered up overtime. I experimented with post it notes to see what effects i could get from that, and this is what i ended up with.

This is my first fontstruct design for my project in my Graphic Design degree at UWE Bristol. This typeface is based on ‘decay’ and the way it takes shape on objects, almost as if it’s melting/ taking over like some kind of disease. I have also used thorns and the way they wrap around each other, like a snake wrapping itself round it’s pray.

The theme behind this piece is decay. I started by experimenting with the things that immediately spring to mind when you think of decay; crumbling walls, rotting vegetables, peeling paint...
Then I found the definition of decay in physics 'transformation of an elementary particle into two or more different particles.' and biological decay 'to break down into component parts.' After experimenting with different ways of breaking up a typeface, I came up with this. A sort of abstract representation of scientific decay.
To create the long, thin diagonal lines, I had to do it on a huge scale, filling almost 3 'screens' in height with each letter. Sadly this meant it's impossible to download the font. E F G O and Q still need a bit of work as they stand out to much.

Hi! My name is Patricia and I study Graphic Design at UWE. As part of my project I decided to use decay as the theme for my font. I started my research by photographing old building, rusty metal, broken brick, etc. Then I started experimenting and looking at other decay fonts, this is when I decided that I didn't want my font to have the typical broken appearance. So I decided to go for more of a scratchy, rough and uneven font. This is a clone
