The industrial revolution gave rise to mass manufacturing; whereby machinery replaced humans, and production snowballed. Textiles were being produced at a rapid speed and in vast quantity, and it was also a pivotal time for print - with the fist linotype machine being invented at around 1883. Mechanised printing meant that newspapers' expansion paralleled the rising population. 'Strength' is a typeface inspired by the widespread industrialisation. The sans serif and square letterforms are a reference to the vast number of red brick factories being erected - the square shape of the font mirroring the literal building blocks.
A second typeface inspired by the theme 'systematic', developed through finding hidden shapes within geometric architecture and using them as building blocks for the letterforms, this time blacked out to create a bolder more imposing style. Sister font to - STACKED
This is a clone of STACKEDThis character set is inspired by the ironwork of balcony railings on Clifton's Victorian buildings. Based on the theme "elegant", I intended to capture the "elegance" portrayed by these ornate artworks, and so the internal patterns are based on actual pattern works from the iron railings. I felt that a set of capitals best captured the almost boastful and eye-catching nature of the railings.
This font was originally inrpired by the word "Unstable". From that word i began to look at multiple unstaible chratcters. I chose to then focus on the new Joker film and the new character joaquin Phoenix had created. The font used for the Joker advertisment, was really impressive however, I fehlt as though it didnt really portray his character well. This font was a way for me to better illustrate The Joker's new character. First I created a very comic block letter that would containe a scratchy "unstable" letter.
This font is produced based off of the buzzword "filthy" which led me to explore the Japanese Yakuza Gang. Inspired by their illustrative tattoos, and jewellery, I produced a typeface which replicates links. Not only do the links visually represent those found in chain necklaces, but they are also metaphorical representations of the fundamentals of gang behaviour, and the brotherhood that is formed
Inspired by the idea of how newspapers are printed to protect us, I've created my first fontstruction for the start of my UWE graphic design course. I drew the letters by hand using black ink and a quill that sort of created this idea of the ink that is used in newspapers. Therefore, creating this abstract font design.
This typeface was created on the main theme of 'Protection' that i later explored in the idea of fences and how they can protect us from the outside world. I wanted my letters to connect with one another creating the illusion of a fence and potraying unity.
My fontstruct steamed from the word wicked this lead my to the word fear. At first I wanted to create a type that looked evil. I made the word fear by using materials to create the letters and putting them in a box for people to touch. One of the materials that I used was pipe cleaner. I based my fontstruct around pipe cleaner. I thought this would be interesting because I had to manipulate the pipe cleaners without using scissors therefore you are restricted and the letters become basic.
My fontstruct is based on the theme of theatre. The designs were achieved from my observations of some theatres in Bristol, as well as further research online. The main inspiration came from the achitecture around the stage curtains, which then lead me to a more art-deco style appoach.

This is my first Construction based on the theme of "Rebirth". I chose this theme as I wanted to investigate how a country is "reborn" after a war or a revolution. This led me to read an article about graphic design ideas that came from the Russian Revolution. One of them was Constructivist typography-combination of contrasting shapes and sizes. I looked at the work of El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko. From this research I began to cut out shapes of different sizes and began to construct letters- however, this idea didn't translate well in FontStruct. To widen my research, I looked at Constructivist and Soviet Brutalist architecture which my font was inspired by. It reflects buildings like the Polytechnic Institute of Minsk, The Palace of Ceremonies, and the Georgian Ministry of Highways in Tbilisi.
With the given theme of Protection, I looked into the human immune system and the biological human features. Researching further into antibodies, I created a type face of the antibody structure which resembles the shape of a capital Y. Following symmetrical shapes and doubled lines, I created an alphabet that mimics the original structure of antibodies, with similar joints and angles.
This display typeface was inspired by the return to traditional Celtic iconography within the insular manuscripts of 6th Century Britain. Each letter is highly ornamented, incorporating chains of interlinked geometry that translate the flowing forms of Celtic knots into the grid based format of Fonstruct.
My first digitally rendered typeface that focused around the theme of energy and its synonyms. I wanted to explore a typeface that would create the illusion of movement without using decorative elements such as gradients, serifs or superfluous details.
The minimalistic approach was inspired by typefaces designed by Paul Rand and the concept was inspired by 'sans forgetica'
This is a cloneUnder the theme destruction, I explored ways to advertise environmental harm we are causing. I took inspiration from the increasing amount of plastic being deposited in the ocean and how it is moulded. I want this font to communicate the harsh impact this plastic waste has on the oceans, the life they hold and how it impacts other aspects of the environment.
My font Slash, is based off of the theme "protect". I chose to base my type on different swords including fantasy based designs. The tip and edges of the letters are based on different sort of tips on swords. This gives my font a sharp and dangerous feel which links to swords.
Escalibur is my font that takes inspiration from medival weaponry. Mimicking the sharp blade like formations found on swords and axes during the 1400's, whilst also refrencing the type and imagery seen on playing cards, typically featuring symbols assosiated with chivalry.
Backslide is an experiment in creating a font that seeks to intentionally reverse one of the most fundamental aspects of modern European languages, that text needs to be read from left to right.
Although this font still types from left to right like a standard Western script, each letter is designed to (hopefully) be completely legible like its forward facing counterparts.
This is a cloneAloe is a font based on shadows and geometry. The idea is to create the illusion of depth within the font. The concept all stems from diligence, at first I thought about the characteristics a diligent person has and wanted to represent this in a font.
I created this typeface as part of a brief set by my graphic design course to create a typeface based on the theme ‘protect’. I took inspiration from 17th century decorated letters, however I wanted my typeface to appear more modern in comparison to the modernity of decorated letters. I knew before I started that I wanted to do rounded letters to give the type that ‘bubbly’ or ‘cloud’ appearance which I really like. The letters are supposed to resemble the appearance of trees, branches and leaves as a tribute to the environment and how we should protect it.

This typeface is based on the hand-painted names seen on the side of canal boats. The inconsistent, grainy texture of each letter is meant to represent the irregularities in using paint, for example the general wear and tear from the elements like chipped or peeling edges. This was my approach to the idea of “analogue” and a brief set to explore what that means. To me, in the context of the brief, analogue could be defined as possessing a nostalgic or "old school" quality- something replicated in an unauthentic manner in order to create a look-alike imitation of a time gone by. I also designed these letters to look like bubbles on the surface of water, hence the name 'Analogue Fizz'. I focused on the old method of transport in Bristol: boats.
This is a clone of Analogue Fizz Stamped"SEAWEED' is a decorative font inspired through my research into the protection of the oceans. Through this research I was intrigued by the way that a simple thing like planting seaweed could possibly hold the key to reversing ocean acidification.
