Malnutrition can be seen as an epidemic of the 21st century. Not only is Starvation continuing to rise in less economically developed countries; Countries who have the resources to be healthy choose a malnourished lifestyle.
It Is not uncommon to only associate malnutrition with not eating enough substantial food; however, it also extends to eating too much food. Both contribute to the crisis and this is why I wanted to incorporate both obesity and anorexia into my typography.
My typography resembles the stretching of skin as if its being pulled into a new and more desired position. This is a common emotional response to malnourishment and obsessions with weight.
Malnourished- a display font. Malnutrition is a lack of proper nutrition, caused by not eating enough or by not eating enough nutritious food. This font was created to show the final effects of being malnurised; bones.
This typeface has come from the initial theme of malnourished, where I looked at using real bones to make a physical typeface. From this, I have developed my idea to look into the deeper meaning of eating disorders and specifically the mental illness surrounding it. My typeface therefore is a representation of body dysmorphia in anorexia, using limb like shapes to create letterforms, showing the reality and perception of people who see themselves as over weight when really they are dangerously underweight.
This is a cloneRIBCAGE.
This typeface has been made from the starting theme of 'Malnourished', from this I started to look intowhat it truley means to be malnourished and the people and places that are affected by this around the world. Through my research I looked at how the body is affected by malnutrition and being malnourished and saw when looking at images that it has a effect on the ribcage that is raher significant. From here I looked at the ribcage and how the bones fir together taking a few striking bones and using them to create letterforms. Each letterfrom ismade up of 2 or more ofthe bones that make up the ribcage that slot together in a simular way to that of the ribs.
This font was based upon the theme of starvation, deriving from the topic of malnourishment. I looked at waste and used/ empty rubbish, in particular food packaging, that I felt represented the fragility of starved beings. Looking at stretched and warped plastic, such as that of empty crisp packets, gave eerie imagery that looked unnatural and like bare skin stretched across bone. I looked creased and stretched materials to extract each letter and manipulate it through fontstruct.
I produced this typeface as a part of a UWE project. This font was created around the theme of Malnourished and involved drinking many cups of tea! I took inspiration from it being the Autumn season and started looking closely at leaves and their structure. I then moved on to show the progression of the season throughout; how as time passes the leaves fall off the trees and the trees are left bare. The type would be better suited to a title or headline font rather than a body text and I've found works best on a large scale.
For this Fontstruct project, I decided to look at the word malnourished. Looking at all aspects that surround the meaning of the word , the lack of proper nutrition caused by not having enough to eat or not consuming the right things for whatever reasons. I decided to look at the fashion industry, looking into what people put themselves through to become the “perfect” size and that the expectation for this image is growing. My font represents this by showing the main spotlight on the front letter which is tall and skinny followed by the reality displayed in the shadow which is a bigger more “healthy” letter , showing the two extremes in a whole typeface.
