I've added a side shadow to Prometheus Regular. The inspiration was a typeface from the French type foundry Peignot. Identified as "No. 1229" in their Lettres Fantaises of 1896, it sports a very fine side shadow, which I've attempted to re-create here. (I found the "No. 1229" sample on Hoefler & Frere-Jones' blog - fifth image from the top.)

May the whole Prometheus Family continue to grow and prosper. The introduction of the hairline shadow is fantastic. Well done Mr. Peg.

Thanks, Mr. Jet. :-)

After the mammoth task of re-sizing the two existing weights, Prometheus Shadow has been a kind of warm-up exercise for the two remaining weights I have planned. I am already working on the new Bold weight.

By the way, here's the sample that inspired Prometheus Shadow:

Nice. Compared to the sample, I really like what you did with the 'E' and 'F'.

Thanks. Prometheus itself is based on a typeface known as Grecian Condensed, of which there are different versions. And of course, I've had to adapt the original shapes to the FontStruct grid... the most notable difference is in the way I constructed the capital M and N.
Comment by SquarePeg 14th november 2008
I think the 'M' and 'N' of Grecian Condensed become too black in the diagonals but with Prometheus, the limitations of the Fontstruct grid force a more uniform approach.

Exellent work!

Thank you, Joe! :-)

Excellent execution of the shadow, Ricardo. Nice character set too. I think its the first to break the FS generator by the sheer number of glyphs.

I wanted to ask you about the diagonal line blackletter font on your website that spelled out 'high priority.' Was that your design, because it would make a mighty fine fontstruction.
Comment by geneus1 19th november 2008
Thanks, geneus1... Yeah, the diagonal line "High Priority" lettering is an idea I had for a blackletter typeface, but I have to say that the letter shapes are based on Matt Desmond's excellent Brauhaus, which is all 45 degree angles and straight lines... It is something I have in the works... When I came up with that idea FontStruct did not exist yet! But who knows... Maybe... :-)

Update: I just set the space character for Prometheus Shadow (Basic Set and Extended Set).

Another update: I've improved some of the lowercase characters. The z is a good example; here's a before-and-after image.

Hi, cam.ill, thanks very much for your praise! I've been away from FontStruct for too long, but your comment brought me back. :-)

Hey SquarePeg: Thank you! In my case its the same.. sometimes i dont visit the site for a year, but when i have an idea for a new project, im here for hours each day:) Just went trough your list and i really love your well balanced Retro-Approach! Btw. i saw your Ribbon-font on this wonderful website: http://www.losttype.com/browse/ (is it yours? im using it for some projects rightnow)
Comment by cam.ill 26th january 2012
Thanks for the link, but that is not my font... Although it does have the same name. :-) I think I need to call my lawyer! Also, the Lost Type fonts are pay-what-you-want; FontStruct fonts are free. Having said that, there is some really nice work on the Lost Type site. Thanks again for the link!

A small update: I fixed an incomplete shadow in the uppercase K, which I only noticed today, while I was working on a new weight of the Prometheus family.

Beautiful set!

Thanks, demonics!

Another small update: on certain diacritical marks, the hairlines were drawn as drop shadows rather than side shadows. A very minor inconsistency, but once I'd noticed it, I just had to fix it!
Comment by SquarePeg 28th november 2012
I don't know why this is down to 7.9. It's one of the most elaborate fontstructions and one of my all time favorites. It should be higher than 9, really.
Comment by laynecom 29th november 2012
Schönen Dank, laynecom! You just made my day. :-) You'll be happy to know that I am working on a new addition to the Prometheus family.
Comment by SquarePeg 29th november 2012
Great to hear that. :-)
Comment by laynecom 29th november 2012
Clearly, one of the best real "typefaces" on FS. 11/10.
Comment by fugitiveglue 30th november 2012
Thanks! My first 11/10... ;-)

Thanks to constant improvements to FontStruct by Rob Meek and crew, I was able to combine all of the characters in Prometheus Regular Shadow into one file! 401 characters... Diacritics galore!
