a typeface centred around the key theme/word 'shadow'. I started looking at how the time of day effected the shape and the size of the subsequent shadow cast. However, I then moved onto the ideas of bevels and a more subtle shadow effect created by raised centres of the letterforms. The 'impossible triangle' effect came from a idea that was brought up in a critique about 'extending it and making it really elaborate'. The name is chosen because I think that typefaces should have friendly names.

As part of my "Found Type" project at UWE, we had to design a font for a theme that we chose. I chose Ornate. I was particularly drawn to this theme due to its relations with Biblical manuscripts and the architecture within Churches. I ended up combining the manuscript like lettering with features of Churches. I realised that this combination creates a great contrast between thick and thin, straight and curves. I found it difficult to create curves on font struct, but I rose to the challenge and created this. I hope you enjoy!

This is my first Fonstruction whilst studying my degree in Graphic Design at UWE. It is themed 'dynamic', however once i started research and mind mapping i went more in the direction of dynamic dance and movement; which is what lead me to looking at ribbons and ballet. I wanted to bring the letterforms back towards the dynamic theme, so decided to make the sides and corners more angular. With some of the letters i tried to create a joined up handwriting feel, inspired by the way that ribbon floats and would fall if it was making the letters naturally.

This typeface is based on the theme of "Vibration". From the beginning I wanted to create a unique design, looking at sound I decided to use my voice as the starting point. After recording myself pronouncing the alphabet and uploading it to a sound editor I looked at the different shapes and patterns it created. This was my voice that was unique to me and was the inspiration for the typeface. I then researched fonts and looked at bold, chunky designs which could hold the pattern without taking too much away from the letter form as it was important to me that my design was still legible. I decided to use the corresponding sound with the letter (i.e. the A has my pronunciation of the letter running through it)making it different from anything I have seen before. This typeface is the response to the word order. I was influenced by Art Deco design, as well as the form of grids. It was developed by hand using a ruler and pen, experimenting with spacing and curves. The same shapes and angles are used right throughout, lending to the idea of an ordered typeface.

This is the second of two typefaces that I have created in response to a brief set in my first term studying Graphic Design at UWE Bristol. My chosen theme for the six week project was decay. I decided to create two fonts, an original and a decayed version. I took inspiration from photos I took of graffiti and tagging around Bristol. For this specific font I was inspired by the way graffiti changes and breaks down over time. Typeface based on the work of Victorian Designer and Architect E. W. Godwin (1833-1886) born in Stokes Croft, Bristol. He was influential in the Aesthetic movement that created "the look" of Victorian Britain. He began his career working in the strongly polychromatic "Ruskinian Gothic" style of mid-Victorian Britain, inspired by The Stones of Venice, then moved on to provide designs in the "Anglo-Japanese taste" of the Aesthetic Movement and Whistler's circle in the 1870s. A friend of Oscar Wilde, James Whistler and William Burges he was also the father of revered actress Dame Ellen Terrys illegitimate child. Godwin's influence can be detected in the Arts and Crafts Movement. To judge from his sketchbooks at the Victoria and Albert Museum, one might have expected an eclectic historicist, but Godwin, by no means a tame reproducer of antiquarian Gothic designs, was among the first to extend the European design repertory to include the arts of Japan, which had been opened to the Western world in 1853. His work is undergoing a revival since he was jokingly adopted as the patron saint of Stokes Croft by community action group the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. The group aim to to put some of his finest architectural achievements in the city back to good use as many of them despite being buildings of some historical significance lie empty and unused. His design work is being reincorporated into the urban landscape through the community organisation's programme of public art and his style has recently been adopted by a number of Street Artists including Dones and Felix Braun so his work is undergoing some kind of a revival.The glyphs are all based on the patterns from his sketchbooks.

i created this font as part of a graphic design project while studying at uwe. i chose the theme of decay and after research and development decided to go with the idea of radioactive decay. i really like the particle effect. the inspiration for this came from images from electron microscopes i found during my research. the build up of particles that make up solid objects is really interesting to me. i wanted to capture the idea of the many tiny particles so i made my font rather large using many circular tiles to gain detail in my letters.

Using the starting point 'repetition' led me to the phrase 'broken record'. My characters are based around the ridges found on a vinyl. Each letterform is a complete circuit that never ends. A working progress.

So here it is...Green Eyed Girl.
This project at UWE Bristol was to create a typefacd based around one word; so I looked into the word 'Curves' (which I probabily will never do again) and eventually came up with this. The idea came from looking at curves in lizards and vines, then linking the curvy-reptile theme with Medusa - hence 'Green Eye'.
Originally I was going to base it on a serif typeface but found that far too difficult on Fontstruct so used aggressive strait lines - similar to pre-historic drawings - to provide contrast against the seductive curves to make it seem like an Evil Temptress. The serif's are there to add authority.
So thats Green Eyed Girl by me...Sophina B.
*I think it may need tweaking in the sense that I've aligned each letter to the edge of the curve rather than the edge against the serif or stem. *

This font was inspired by the wrought iron work I have noticed when exploring Bristol. The idea developed further when I saw some Greek decoration while researching on the internet. The two came together, the meeting of curves, lines and spirals to form Keys, a modern take on ancient symbolism mixed with a reminder of industrial exuberance.

For my project I went with the theme of laziness (after an early failed attempt at using the theme of repetition).
Whilst researching my theme I looked into the things people like doing best when feeling lazy, two very popular activities were smoking and sleeping. I wanted to create a simple/clean typeface that had a lazy feel to it. I tried to avoid giving it a predictable slouched look and thought a smokey/dreamy effect would work well for a font and also link to my research.
I wanted to incorporate the smoking and sleeping/dreaming themes into the name and thought 'Pipe Dream' was perfect as it relates to both smoking and dreaming.
All feedback is appreciated.

UPDATE: I have altered the letters 'U', 'H' and 'X' in order to increase legibility. - 14/11/11
The outcome of my first Graphic Design project at the University of the West of England. This typeface is based on the designated theme of 'Evil'. As the project developed I began to move away from the rather stereotypical 'dark' imagery commonly associated with evil and approached the topic in a different, light-hearted manner. This led me onto the theme of villainy in popular culture, from film to video games. The classic ghosts of the arcade game Pac-Man are designed with such consideration - they are required to communicate both character and threat to the player, whilst still falling within the limitations of the 1980s hardware. As a result, these creatures personify the concept of 'evil stripped down to its essential forms.'

The font Flomotion is the outcome to my first semester at UWE, studying Graphic Design. The task was to create a full typeface on the font building website, fontstruct.com. The final design had to relate to a chosen theme, my chosen theme for this project was Motion in which I pursued the subject of optical illusions. I liked the idea of trying to create a false sense of movement with a font, taking inspiration from existing optical illusions with the same effect. This then led me to look at the 'Op' art movement of the 1960's, in particular the extensive work of Bridget Riley. Her use of black and white line giving the illusion of depth had a big influence on my work and I think my final design reflects this.

As part of a project for my graphic design course at UWE, our brief was to create a typeface based on a theme. I chose vibration as my theme as I explored my theme I was drawn to line graphs which help record the frequency of sounds. I wanted my typeface to resemble this like it was on an ECG monitor. I also looked at John Skelton’s pinpression typeface which truly inspired my font, having continuous lines connecting all of the characters was very important and finding his work showed me that it was possible. This is my first attempt at creating a typeface and there are still alterations that need to be done.

Lemiscus is a display typeface created for the module 'Communicating with words' at UWE, inspired by the word 'ornate'. Initial research led me to design a typeface where each letter is arranged from a single length of ribbon (although I have had to break this rule for some punctuation). I laid the ribbon out into the shape of each letterform and copied every angle on Fontstruct to get it just right.
Due to us UWE students overwhelming the Fontstruct servers tonight, I can’t edit my Fontstruction any more right now, but I should have all those little out of place bits and bobs nice and tidy in the next week.
