I cut the letter 'A' out of black cardboard and placed it in a glass of water, and then photographed it at many different angles and positions. I really liked the distorted effect the water had on the letters, and so after changing the theme to 'reflection' I carried on this technique with the rest of the alphabet. 'Pane in my glass' is made up of my favourite shapes that came out of this experimentation.

This lead me to the Star of David and I looked at Daniel Libeskind's designs for the Jewish Museum in Berlin. I experimented with which letters fit into the religious symbol and it turned out that they all did! After making a 3D version of the font I decided to fill it with black to give more of a contrast and make it more legible! So here it is... The Star of Harriet 3D Black!

If something has a tactile nature it will appeal to children to play with it and 'squish' it. From this I explored how sponges are very squeezable and photographed them in different ways. Alongside this thought process I was also sketching water in letter forms and loved how it appears to have a squishy texture in itself because it is fluid. Combining these ideas, I experimented with cutting sponges into letter forms, applying paint, squishing them and creating a typeface based on the marks they leave behind on a laminate table surface.

A crossword is a word puzzle that normally takes the form of a square or a rectangular grid of white and black shaded squares, however i decided to remove the black background that is normally visible as i wanted to create a clear, sleek and flowing typeface. Initially i wanted to create the whole font out of 4x3, but soon i realised that some letters wouldn't work and that would then make the whole font harder to read so i increased my canvas size per letter to 5x5 maximum. The numbers have no relevance to the shape of the letters, they are just evenly spread so that they don't duplicate next to each other. I have started playing around with other versions of the font and hope to get them live soon.

This typeface design has been created for my first typography project at UWE Bristol. it has been inspired by Bristol's past Tobacco history by taking inspiration from the architectural elements of the disused Tobacco warehouses that still stand prominent in the Southville area of the city. After studying the buildings and making site visits to take photographs from all 4 sides of the warehouse, i started to look at how i could create the letter forms by using the occurring perspective of the building in relation to where i was stood.

What i most like about the whole design is it not an obvious 'Reflection' inspired design and for me that has made this project a success. Later on this design will be constructed into a 3D word, where i intend to make the letters out of Red Brick like the buildings themselves.

I began by looking at jewelry and "flourishes" on other fonts. After playing around with shapes and curves I realised i hadn't been thinking outside of the box.
Ornate could have different meanings and take many forms. I then took interest in Aztec and Native American prints. I particularly liked the "hand crafted"/"imperfect" shapes and chose to comunicate the rawness in my typeface.

I chose Saintly.

Throughout my research, I looked at the architecture of churches, the similarities in there designs and how certain shapes could easily be recognised as being linked to that type of architecture.

I then started looking at Dante Alghieri's Divine Comedy and the illustrations by John Flaxman and Gustav Doré.

At first it became difficult trying to figure out how to implement this into a font, but then I took on a challenge,

Would it be possible to get Doré's engravings into the font.

Then another thought crossed my mind, how do images look when compressed to low pixel quality sizes and how they are still recognisable.

So I did that, I bought a book of Doré's illustrations for the divine comedy, and they started to build into the letters.

Each letter also has this Art Deco like area to it which went well for the Stain Glass Window approach I also wanted in the design.

It took a lot of practice to get this right, and there was a fair amount of copy and pasting here and there but overall I'm quite happy with the turn out.

I hope you all enjoy!

My theme word was 'chaos' I began exploring the meaning of this word. This led to several experiments exploring how I could use marks or patterns to express chaos. My favourite experiment used the stencil of the letter and then used drops of ink, the negative space of the letter was left once the stencil was removed and surrounding this were random drops of ink. Each letter was therefore unique so there was already an element of chaos in the typeface, but I also felt the effect of ink created an energetic feeling which felt chaotic.

During my research, I have been exploring "Energy" from different points of view, from the essence of it, to scientific bases and other concepts like positive and negative energy in different contexts.
The work has been inspired by the scientific way, more concretely in Nikola Tesla's experiments in the area. I found interesting how energy is created in a specific point and spreads creating different shapes.
The typeface is also inspired by "Futura" typeface due to the time relationship between the creation of it and the experimentation period of Tesla.
This is meant to be a display typeface, but I think it can work in a medium or big size.
It ended up being quite "blocky", which I am not sure about, so all comments are welcome.

I tried out a wide range of experimentation when it came to producing hand rendered work, as I felt I needed to work out what would best capture the general sense of the word.
I tried using inks on elastic bands, attaching pens to a playstation controller and drawing, photographing food colouring over a speaker; all sorts. Finally, I decided I needed something which really reflected the word clearly. I looked at the white noise and the trails that you get on the television, and applied this feel to a sans serif font I had made based on Georgia (minus the Serifs)
One of the most time comsuming things I've ever done, hope its been worth it.

I was thinking about what is left after something has completely decayed, which brought me to the idea of using skulls. After having created the skull outline, I tried different ways of including the letterforms, and decided that the simpler the better (and more readable.) As a result, the typeface has gained a sort of old-school computer game-esque feel - hence the name.
