Looking at this, I understand more about why you were asking about spacing.

Using the rs pair as an example: This pair is best solved through kerning. (Access the Kerning Dialog from the Preview panel while in Expert Mode.) I would try kerning rs by -1 in this case. You can paste this text string into the Preview panel:


...and that will show you how r interacts with other letters. You can then kern them individually. It's a lot of work, but Blackletter designs like this benefit heavily from it.

There is no "optimal" way to address spacing or kerning. It is all up to the specific design you made and your specific intentions as an artist. There's no magic bullet. It is a lot of work and a lot of testing long strings of characters, as I said. No getting around that... unless you make a design which is based mainly on straight vertical lines and has minimal projecting pieces.
