“RayType Alpha” by geneus1

In 1981, Konami introduced the worlds first side scrolling shooter video game, called Scramble. This game took many quarters from me as it was a regular stop walking home from school to play. It had forced scrolling from right to left with a fighter jet infiltrating harsh terrain and enemy bases. In 1987, the company Irem produced R-Type - a side scroller with heavy graphics that was like Scramble on Steroids. The fighter crafts had different weapon capabilities that could be upgraded. Originally, the "R" series of spacecrafts stood for "Ray," like ray gun. RayType Alpha represents a time in between Scramble and R-Type, with RayType Alpha representing the first alpha version of the series. In my game, each letter becomes a chamber in the enemy's giant spacecraft environment. The spaceship must fly through each chamber, shooting down turrets and projectiles, while collecting powerups dispersed on specific locations of only certain letters. Like StepWyze, This is also an actual game (proof of concept only) that is unfinished, but I will post a link as soon as I have enough playable elements coded in. This font is heavily packed, maximizing the GameComp-required 48 grid spaces. 12.02.14 Game Uploaded!

So this was made into an actual game. The font was sketched out a while ago, but after the GameComp started, I thought it would adapt well to transforming into one of those infinite jumper games popular on mobile devices. Instead I let it become a right to left scroller with the player jumping through words that actually say something. It's somewhat meta in that the player has to navigate the platform and make sense of the words at the same time. Simple to play. Try not to stumble over your words as you go about your business and time flies by. Just like in real life.

The game is just a proof of concept and not at all near completed. I'll probably just post what I have to show it in motion.

You play Bentley Bear walking around castles and collecting gems. Trimetric instead of isometric. Interestingly enough, the initials of the highest scorer in the leaderboard is used to build the first castle.

This font version is created using the same thin plated tiles that the player traverses through the castles.

This was fun to do. I made the sample scroll down in like another 80s video game classic: Marble Madness. It was difficult fitting the whole thing within 48 grid squares, but totally possible. This was actually kept a little under at 46.

All language systems have been destroyed or co-opted to brainwash and convert all into the feared Zogg Zombies. These creatures patrol the wastelands of Zogg-occupied lands. These zombies on motorcycles have marauded countless tribes and they rammage through the rubbage of Zogg's crusading empire. Rebels reprogram and use the hacked Zogg alphabet to send encoded messages that enable disparate groups to unite and fight the zombie onslaught. Rebels attack online weapon systems and military targets. Zogg troops battle to decode the embedded messages to expose rebels as they use stealth devices to attack their targets...

Each level contains anagrams that must be unscrambled within a given amount of time to move to the next level. Player gets points for as many words spelled correctly, but can only move to next level by correctly solving anagram. As time diminishes, the letters start wiggling and eventually break apart making it more difficult to use the remaining pieces to solve correctly. Points can be used to fuse letters back together, but doesn't last long. Also the crawling pieces can start eating away at already formed words, reducing your score. Or something like that :)

I discovered via this article (http://fontsinuse.com/uses/8007/future-exhibitions-n-1) that geneus1 created a similar font (http://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/75591) to this one in 2008. Despite the obvious similarities, I did not know of geneus1's font until 2014/11/28.

Based on Tetris blocks. I tried to avoid using too many 1x4 and 2x2 blocks. I also tried to make each character self-supporting...meaning the blocks are built up from the bottom and the upper blocks are supported by the lower ones and not just floating in mid-air. Due to some design decisions and time constraints, I didn't achieve this with every character.

Interactive Entertainment, 2014) based on Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. Given the game theme, and the 48 bricks vertical limit, I thought more or less around pixel art, or pixel fonts. This is my endeavour to make a spiky blackletter in Szpajdel's black metal style that evokes the terror of Mordor at pixel level. This font has been extensively tested for best kerning, yet some issues might have remained unresolved.
